Because we live in a multicultural country, we at OTR are convinced that bilingualism is a fundamental asset for the personal and intellectual development of our students.
Mastering two languages, English and French, allows for greater mental flexibility: the capacity for reflection is increased tenfold, the child has greater ease in learning and integrating complex concepts, as well as different cultures and ways of thinking.
Bilingualism also allows for greater ease in speaking other languages. Indeed, knowledge of phonetic particularities makes it easier to assimilate a third or even a fourth language.
Enfin, le bilinguisme favorise la communication avec autrui et le respect des différences.
Primary school students from G1 to G5 will spend 50% of their learning time in French and 50% in English. The two lessons will be coordinated and balanced.
When a connection between the two languages is possible, certain concepts will be studied with both teachers in order to allow a cross-examination and promote an international understanding which is also part of the IB* PYP programme.
Each class is organized by level according to the subjects:
Subjects in English
- English language
- Mathematics
- Science
- Arts (expressive arts and visual arts)
- Sport
- ICT
Subjects in French
- French language
- History
- Geography
As soon as they enter G5, students are introduced to a third language of their choice: Spanish or German.
In order for the learning to be meaningful, it will be organized into interdisciplinary bilingual projects.
After school hours, during activities offered by our daycare, the language of communication and teaching will be French or English.
